Queen Elizabeth II transformed the monarchy following a horrible year more than two decades ago.

The year 1992 was considered “annus horribilis” for the royals. It was the year that the Firm was shaken following Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ failed marriage. In addition, Prince Andrew’s wife, Sarah Ferguson, was caught in an infamous toegate scandal with her financial advisor, John Bryan.

The Queen’s efforts to rehabilitate the monarchy were upended by the Duke of York’s relationship with adult film actress Koo Stark. Overall, the year was really tough for the royal family.

“The press was less forgiving, digging deeply to uncover more dirt to mar his suitability as trade envoy,” author Jessica Jayne wrote in her book “Prince Andrew: The War Hero of Buckingham Palace.”

Queen Elizabeth II also acknowledged this during her speech at Guildhall on Nov. 24, 1992, which marked her 40th anniversary as the monarch.

“1992 is not a year on which I shall look back with undiluted pleasure. In the words of one of my more sympathetic correspondents, it has turned out to be an 'Annus Horribilis'. I suspect that I am not alone in thinking it so,” the monarch said.

Constitutional expert Vernon Bogdanor believes that the Queen has successfully rehabilitated the monarchy "from a rather magical monarchy to a public service monarchy" after the incident.

He added that the monarchy has to “adapt and evolve” in order to survive. “It can’t be ahead of public opinion, but it can’t be too far behind. It's a difficult balance to achieve,” Bogdanor said.

There are rumors that Prince Charles is taking over the throne soon. According to Nicholas Bieber, there will be a big change in 2021 when Queen Elizabeth II turns 95. She will reportedly trigger the Regency Act that will make the Prince of Wales a “king in all but name.”

“And just this week major preparations were already being ramped up in the run-up to the big takeover on April 21, 2021,” Bieber wrote the week Prince Charles celebrated his 70th birthday.

In related news, a prophecy by Nostradamus claiming that Prince Harry will be king has been making rounds online recently. According to the prophecy, the Duke of Sussex may appear less proficient and capable but he will be “taking the throne by the order of the court.”
