The Queen Mother had a very close relationship with her grandson, Prince Charles. And she was on board when the heir to the throne told her that he wanted to marry Princess Diana.

Queen Elizabeth’s mom tried her best to be amicable towards the Princess of Wales. But things quickly changed after the late royal separated from Prince Charles.

In an article he wrote for Daily Mail, Major Colin Burgess said that even though the Queen Mother appeared to be a friendly, warm, and popular, there was something about her that scared people off.

“There was a streak of steel in the Queen Mother and I got a glimpse of what it could be like to cross her shortly after I began working for her in the summer of 1994,” he said.

Burgess also said that the Queen Mother had so much for her favorite grandchild, Prince Charles. But it was evident that she didn’t have any love left for Princess Diana after their separation.

“Once Diana split from Charles, she was very much persona non grata, and I never again heard her name mentioned by, or in front of, the Queen Mum, not even when I saw her a couple of months after Diana’s death, by which time I had left her to employ,” Burgess said.

Meanwhile, Burgess also said that Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s separation didn’t just affect the royal family but also their staff. It came to a point wherein the palace aides had to pick sides between the two royals.

The Prince and Princess of Wales also seemed to be angry all the time. “ If you walked into any of his offices, you could easily witness something being thrown at someone in anger. Even the Prince would pick things up and launch them at one of his staff if that person had done something wrong or said something inappropriate to the press,” he said.
