KEY POINTS

  •  "Cats" was named the "worst movie of 2019" at the Golden Raspberry Awards
  • Rebel Wilson, James Corden won in the supporting actor categories
  • Tom Hooper was named worst director

Hollywood produces a plethora of movies every year. Some movies go on to become giant hits while others just pray that they could make some profit out of it. If the Academy Awards honors all the great movies of the year, the Golden Raspberry Awards aka Razzies honors the films that created huge hype but eventually turned out to be duds.

The winners' list of the 2020 Golden Raspberry Awards was announced recently and it was Tom Hooper’s “Cats” that dominated the list with six wins, including the worst film of the year. The other movies nominated in the category were “Rambo: Last Blood,” “The Fanatic,” “The Haunting Of Sharon Tate,” and “A Madea Family Funeral.”

Rebel Wilson and James Corden won awards in the Supporting Actor categories while Hooper was adjudged worst director for “Cats.”

The movie, based on the stage musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber, revolves around a tribe of cats called the Jellicles who must decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.

Unfortunately, the film turned out to be a dud at the box office and got panned by the critics as well.

The film, starring Judi Dench, Idris Elba, and Jennifer Hudson in pivotal roles, currently has a score of 20 percent on review site Rotten Tomatoes.

John Travolta won the worst actor trophy while Hilary Duff was named worst actress for “The Haunting Of Sharon Tate.” Meanwhile, Sylvester Stallone’s latest entry in the “Rambo” saga took home two awards, including worst remake, rip-off, or sequel.

On the other hand, Eddie Murphy was awarded the Razzie Redeemer Award. The particular award is given to the star who has previously been nominated or won a Razzie for their past performances but redeemed it by giving a solid performance.
