KEY POINTS

  • The Red Sox are nowhere near sealing the deal with Rafael Devers
  • Devers are likely to slip past the hands of Boston
  • The Red Sox continue to lose big-name players

The Boston Red Sox are on the verge of potentially losing another star, with reports that they and Rafael Devers are pretty far apart as far as contract negotiations are concerned.

Citing multiple sources, Joon Lee of ESPN reported that the Red Sox and Devers are "galaxies apart" in contract negotiations.

As a result, the current expectation by the camp of Devers is that the 2018 World Series champion to likely head into free agency by 2023.

With the current development, such has hardly surprised pundits given their history of handling past stars. That list includes Xander Bogaerts and Mookie Betts, two big names that got away from the Red Sox.

Betts wanted to stay in Boston but the Red Sox did not want to give him the $400 million contract he desired and opted to trade him to the Dodgers instead.

Bogaerts, on the other hand, also wanted to stay, but the Red Sox did not match the 11-year $280 million offer that the Padres dangled.

Boston traded Betts to the Dodgers and failed to secure Bogaerts who eventually joined the San Diego Padres.

Looking ahead, Devers could be following the same path.

But until that time comes, general manager Chaim Bloom told reporters that they would try to settle the contract situation of the 2021 Silver Slugger Award winner.

"We will probably, I think, go beyond reason to try to get this done. Hopefully, we can get this done. There are always going to be limitations like people can just put something plain out of reach. Some people love to bet on themselves and I hope he hits 63 homers if he does that," Bloom said via CBS Sports.

Hence, all eyes will now be on the front office to see if they can resolve the Devers situation.

At 26, the Dominican has accomplished a lot in his career, including a World Series title.

Considering the Red Sox are coming off a last-place finish in the American League East with a 78-84 record, losing Devers would be another black eye that may raise questions about where the team, listed as the third-most valuable franchise in the MLB, is headed.
