On “Riverdale,” it’s hard to know when Hiram Lodge is actually doing something nice. The end of the “Riverdale” Season 4 premiere featured Veronica learning that her father took care of the bill for Fred’s funeral, so fans might wonder if he had an ulterior motive. Actor Mark Consuelos told International Business Times that this is a rare moment of no-strings-attached generosity for his character.

“You know, at the end of the day, he’s a dad. He takes care of his family—in a very bizarre way, but that’s what he does,” he told IBT and a small group of reporters at New York Comic Con. “I think that despite all the differences he had with Fred, he did respect him, and he does have a sort of caring relationship with Archie. It’s just that it’s complicated. So I think he does come from a great place.”

The CW drama won’t reference Hiram’s act of kindness during the first half of Season 4. “He doesn’t even talk about it,” Consuelos said. “So he does kind of throw it out there. If you kind of look back at the first two seasons that I worked on, there are a few kind of hidden Mickeys out there that he does things and doesn’t expect anything from it. There’re very few though.”

It’s easy to see why his act of kindness isn’t mentioned. After all, Hiram is in prison. Granted, it’s one that he built, so he isn’t exactly living the average life of an inmate. However, he’ll have more drama once his elder daughter comes into town.

As previously reported, Hiram’s daughter from a previous relationship is back in the picture after spending time running Hiram’s business in Miami. It turns out she is quite loyal to him and they might be even closer than he was with Veronica. Of course, that means Hermione (Marisol Nichols) has an issue with her.

“I think that this other daughter is a constant reminder that she doesn’t and never really did have Hiram at all and her bringing him around is just like a slap in the face. It’s really annoying, but she can’t do anything about it,” Nichols said.

“Riverdale” Season 4 airs Wednesdays on The CW.
