“Scandal” Season 7 will see Mellie (Bellamy Young) reuniting with her ex-husband, Fitzgerald (Tony Goldwyn), in the upcoming episodes. Unfortunately, their reunion will be more business-oriented rather than romantic.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Young confirmed that Mellie and Fitz will have plenty of scenes together in the upcoming episodes of the hit ABC series. After all, Mellie realized in the final moments of Season 6 that she can still rely on Fitz since the latter is the only person that knows her as well as she knows herself.

Young also expressed her excitement over Mellie and Fitz working together in the final season of “Scandal.” “Over the course of this whole show, we’ve never seen them be aligned energetically. We met them in the worst moment of their marriage, one of the worst moments of Mellie’s life, and it’s been a very convoluted road between them,” she said.

Also in the previous seasons, Mellie served Fitz while the latter was the president of the United States. However, Fitz became distant when he got involved with Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington). Young acknowledged the fact that such a storyline can definitely happen in real life.

“That’s what happens sometimes, but life is also complicated, so people don’t just stop existing. Those connections endure, so to get to watch Fitz and Mellie rediscover the relevance of their connection in a new way, I’m just so excited about that,” she said.

Meanwhile, “Scandal” Season 7 will have a total of 17 episodes. According to TV Line, the upcoming season will have two more episodes compared to Season 16. Last year, the people behind the series had to accommodate Washington’s pregnancy so the original 22-episode order became 16.

Talking about the end of the series, executive producer Shonda Rhimes told The Hollywood Reporter that she plans to go all out. “We are going to go all out, leaving nothing on the table. Creating this world in celebration. We are going to handle the end the way we like to handle the important things in our ‘Scandal’ family: all together, white hats on, Gladiators running full speed over a cliff,” she said.

“Scandal” Season 7 will premiere on ABC in the fall.
