Shiftall, a subsidiary of Panasonic, announced at the CES 2022 in Las Vegas a new ultra-lightweight consumer Virtual Reality (VR) headset called MeganeX. The device is nothing like the industry had seen so far, with its makers designing the product with the metaverse in mind.

Ultra-high specs

The Shiftall MeganeX VR headset sports a 1.3 inch OLED Microdisplay 5.2K (2,560×2,560 per eye), 10bit HDR / 120Hz, which is by far the world's highest image projection. The team collaborated with Kopin Corporation to engineer the VR headset and utilize Lightning OLED microdisplay, as well as Pancake lenses as display or optics components.

Kopin is a Westborough, Massachusetts-based electronics manufacturer, best known for its display devices for mobile electronics. The company has been in the industry for more than three decades and has been providing essential components and solutions for wearable products for military, enterprise, industrial, medical and consumer markets.

The Shiftall MeganeX VR Headset houses the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR1 to provide users with a high-quality and optimized virtual reality experience. Additionally, the device has built-in speakers on the foldable frame for portability.

Ultra-lightweight headset

Shiftall wants the MeganeX to be ultra-lightweight considering that consumers spend over 2,000 hours per year in the metaverse. A light device will not strain users regardless of the time they spend wearing the headset.

The Shiftall MeganeX VR headset weighs approximately 250g or around 8.8oz and with the help of Kopin's ultra-light plastic Pancake optics, the team was able to come up with a lighter product. Its weight, however, is a little bit heavier than the HTC Vive Flow, which also utilizes Pancake optics.

Overall design

The Shiftall MeganeX headset sports an unusual design that looks less of a VR headset and more of a sunglass. Instead of the usual design where users strap the device on their head, the MeganeX features stems that are slightly curved around the back of their head and sit over the users' ears.

It has foldable frames just like a pair of glasses, while its eyepiece resembles a lot like a pair of binoculars with a couple of round cups. The headset has no release date yet but it is estimated to retail at around $900. More importantly, it is compatible with Stam VR.

Final verdict

The Shiftall MeganeX VR Headset is a revolutionary product designed with the metaverse in mind. It houses an interesting set of technical specifications and uses the latest technology in the industry to ensure that it achieves its target.
