A man killed himself after shooting his wife at a home in Summerville, South Carolina, on Wednesday morning.

Officials with the Summerville Police Department responded to the home after receiving a report about “multiple injuries.” The responding officers found a man dead and woman injured.

Summerville Police spokesman Lt. Shaun Tumbleston confirmed the victims were a married couple and that they believe the husband shot his wife before turning the gun on himself. The identity of the husband was not released.

Meanwhile, speaking to local media on Wednesday, Alex Jones, the son of the couple involved in the shooting, said he was asleep when he heard gunshots.

“I smelled some gunpowder and then I’m like, ‘Oh, it might be in my dream,’” Jones said, adding that he then heard his mother screaming his name and immediately rushed to help her. He noticed that his mother was lying on the ground with a gunshot wound below her chest.

“I rush over and see my mom on the ground. My brother is trying to calm my dad down because he has the gun to his head, my dad had the gun to his head, not my brother’s,” he recalled.

“I was shaking, shaking bad, like it just feels like a bad dream,” Jones continued, adding that he didn’t try to speak to his father.

“I was too scared, I was scared he was going to do something else, so I tried to keep my distance as much as possible. I had to like drag my mom away from my dad’s line of sight, just in case anything were to happen,” Jones said, adding that his father then shot himself and succumbed to injuries at the scene.

The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was being treated. She was expected to make a full recovery. Police were investigating the incident and the motive behind the shooting was not known.

Meanwhile, Jones said he was trying to deal with what happened.

“Yesterday was normal. You know, like yesterday was normal, like, what just happened?” he asked.
