Th PlayStation 4-exclusive “Spider-Man” game was shown off during Sony’s E3 2017 press conference earlier this week, and Insomniac Games has revealed some new details about the game. The developer says that the map of the “Spider-Man” game will be huge and that players won’t be able to kill villains.

“The map size is probably four to six times that of ‘Sunset Overdrive,’” Insomniac community director James Stevenson said. “Sunset Overdrive” was Insomniac’s last open-world game, which was released back in 2014 exclusively for the Xbox One.

“Sunset Overdrive’s” map features plenty of vertical layers, while also having tons of side quests and other activities. In terms of actual size of the map in square-feet, it was a lot smaller than the maps of “Grand theft Auto V” or “The Legend of Zelda: breath of the Wild.”

With “Spider-Man,” it seems like Insomniac is trying to give the web-headed superhero more room for exploration. The only thing to worry about now is whether “Spider-Man's” map will feature a dense amount of activities to do.

Speaking of the map, Insomniac also confirmed that the “Spider-Man” game will be its “own world.” It will still be set in the familiar New York City that’s populated by in-canon characters and places, but Insomniac says it will still be able to “surprise people,” accoridng to Game Rant. One of the surprises the developer did reveal at its E3 event was that the game will feature future Spider-Man Mile Morales.

As for the story, Insomniac says that the “Spider-Man” game will feature an original storyline that’s not been done in the comics, movies or TV shows. "This isn’t a retelling of his origin story; our Spider-Man features a 23-year-old Peter Parker who has become a masterful Spider-Man. While he may be more experienced, Peter and Spider-Man’s worlds continue to collide as he tries to juggle them," creative director Bryan Intihar said.

Another thing that's been confirmed is that one of the game’s major villains will be Mr. Negative. Although the spotlight will be on Mr. Negative, Insomniac says that there will be other villains present within the game. The reason as to why Mr. Negative will have more focus is because of Peter Parker’s more personal connection with the character.

Mr. Negative, real name Martin Li, runs a soup kitchen in Chinatown called the F.E.A.S.T. Project. This soup kitchen is also where Peter’s aunt May volunteers at. This is why Mr. Negative will be a “very big part of the game.”

Speaking of villains, Insomniac Games confirmed that players of “Spider-Man” won’t be able to kill enemies by throwing them off buildings. This was first noticed when Sony revealed a gameplay demo of the game during its E3 2017 press event. In the demo, we see Spider-Man throwing off a thug off a skyscraper only to sling him back into safety.

“We wouldn’t not allow that,” Intihar said, according to The Verge. “Marvel would not allow that, the world would not allow that.”

It wasn’t made clear how the game is able to do this, but it seems like AI in “Spider-Man” automatically prevents this from happening.

“Spider-Man” will arrive for the PS4 sometime in 2018. Sony and Insomniac Games haven’t revealed an exact release date yet.
