  • Jung Ho-Yeon was nominated for Supporting Actress in a Drama series
  • Oh and Jung were featured together on the cover of Variety magazine's June issue
  • Lee Jung-Jae was also nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor

Sandra Oh expressed her joy following the Emmy nomination of “Squid Game” actor Jung Ho-Yeon.

The “Grey’s Anatomy” star, who shares South Korean roots with the young 28-year-old actress, took to Instagram on Wednesday to share the recent cover of Variety magazine featuring them both together. “Congratulations Jung Ho Yeon on your Emmy nomination! Now I get to see you again. How fortuitous was our Variety cover?” Oh captioned the post.

On Tuesday, the dystopian drama “Squid Game” made history as the first non-English show to be nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Drama category.

The South Korean drama received a total of 14 Emmy nominations including the Outstanding Lead Actor award for Lee Jung-Jae, Outstanding Supporting Award for Park Hae-Soo and Oh Young-Soo, and Outstanding Supporting Actress award for Jung.

“Squid Game” actress Lee You-Mi is also nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.

The Netflix show has received many accolades so far at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. The show also won the Breakthrough Series – Long Format at the 31st Annual Gotham Award in New York City in 2021.

When Oh and Jung appeared on the cover of Variety magazine's June issue, they discussed the pressure of representing Asian Americans in the U.S. While Jung has risen to prominence in international media with the popularity of “Squid Game,” Oh is an established Canadian-American actress whose parents immigrated to Canada from South Korea in the 1960s.

The actresses, who met for the first time during the interview, hit it off well and immediately made dinner plans after the shoot, Vareity reported. The conversation was also shared on the outlet’s “Actors on Actors” series shared on Youtube.

Jung revealed that when she came to the U.S. to promote "Squid Game," a lot of Asian American fans would thank her for "representing them." The 28-year-old actress said, "At the beginning, it was just happy. But I also think about 'I came from Korea, I lived in Korea almost my whole life — am I allowed to represent them?'"

Oh advised Jung to take it easy because of the growing number of Asian American actors and models landing big projects in the U.S. “So while I want to thank you for that, because I do, I also want to relieve you of any kind of — it’s impossible to relieve you of the pressure — but I want to somehow relieve you of the pressure for that,” Oh told Jung.
