These are tough times as fans of the franchise prepare to celebrate Star Wars Day amid coronavirus crisis on Monday (May 4). With lockdown in place, this iconic day will be celebrated at home with family and friends.

Star Wars Day: The origin

Star Wars Day did not come up in a corporate board room, rather it was chosen by the fans to celebrate their love for the franchise. "May the fourth" rhymes with the phrase “May the force be with you” used by Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The phrase was first used in 1979, two years after the release of the “Star Wars” movie, according to The Verge. At the time, Britain's Conservative Party released a full-page ad, congratulating the newly-elected Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, in the London Evening News. “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations,” read the headline.

How to celebrate Star Wars Day in quarantine
