There have been some “Star Wars: Episode 9” rumors about the opening scene after the crawl. The scene was initially thought to be for nostalgia, and to satisfy the fans who love the characters from the Original Trilogy. However, new details have surfaced online that explain how the opening scene is an important set up for the rest of the story.

The following article contains spoilers of “Star Wars: Episode 9.”

A previous report by Making Star Wars had revealed that the film opens with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) training with blue and green lighsabers. This is a flash back sequence around the time of “Return of the Jedi,” and both the characters look younger.

The opening sequence is significant because many fans did not like the idea of seeing Luke die in “The Last Jedi.” Fisher passed away before she could even start filming the last movie in the Sequel Trilogy, in which she was supposed to have a significant role. The flash back scene helps in not only bring back these two characters on screen, but it also gives the fans the highly anticipated reunion of the siblings.

However, a new report by Making Star Wars reveals that the opening scene in “Star Wars: Episode 9” is not there just for nostalgia, but it also plays an important role in setting up the rest of the movie. The scene establishes that Leia was training to be a Jedi, but stopped when she became pregnant with Ben Solo, who now goes by the name Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

The other important part of the scene is that this is actually a vision Rey (Daisy Ridley) sees in the present time. The young Jedi’s vision is broken when someone calls out “Master Leia!”

A previous report by Making Star Wars suggested that the first scene for Rey in “Star Wars: Episode 9” will be about her training in the forest with the guidance of Leia. This is a scene that was also teased in the D23 video.
