Will Rey (Daisy Ridley) turn to the Dark Side in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”? As unlikely as this may seem, it is what the D23 footage of the film teased. Some theories have surfaced online to try and explain what that scene in the video means.

Rey has been attracted to the Dark Side ever since she started to formally learn about the Force from Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). While she has been using her powers for good so far, there may be a change coming in the upcoming film.

The footage of the film that was screened at the D23 event first showed the Force duel between Rey and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), which was expected. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the scene that the fans have been talking about is from the end of the video in which Ridley’s character wore a dark hood like a Sith Lord and carried a red double lightsaber.

Rey is supposed to be the hero in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” Why would she turn to the Dark side? According to a theory by Screen Rant the character’s change could mirror “Revenge of the Sith,” and this ending could set the stage for future movies. The other possibility is that Ridley’s character makes the switch in the second act, and she then switches back to the Light side towards the end. Her turning back to the Light side could be set a few years in the future.

Another theory suggests that the scene of Rey turning Dark is actually a dream sequence. The Force visions has been a big part of the sequel trilogy, and showing a bleak future where the hero turns into a villain may be just one of these visions.

A new poster of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” has also been released, which teases Emperor Palpatine’s (Ian McDiarmid) face looming over both Rey and Kylo Ren. According to Screen Rant the picture of Palpatine in the poster is actually of a toy, which means the Sith Lord may not return in this form in the upcoming film.
