A Pennsylvania police chief was killed, and another officer was injured while they were pursuing a suspect wanted for a probation violation.

The 28-year-old suspected gunman was later shot and killed by cops Monday night, officials said.

The officers began chasing the suspect wanted for probation violation for weapons, identified as Aaron Swan, 28, of the Duquesne area, after he was spotted in the Brackenridge at around 2 p.m. on Monday. Swan shot at two officers while the cops followed him on foot, the New York Times reported.

Allegheny County Police superintendent, Christopher Kearns, identified the slain officer as Brackenridge Police Chief Justin McIntire. He was shot in the head and died at the scene.

Meanwhile, the injured officer, who got shot in the leg, remains unidentified. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was reportedly in stable condition.

After the shooting, Swan reportedly carjacked a vehicle and fled the scene, prompting the cops to intensify a search for him. He was later fatally shot in Pittsburgh's Homewood neighborhood after he fired at the police officers.

According to reports, Swan has a long history of criminal convictions. He was sentenced to three years after shooting a K-9 officer in 2014, who stopped him for carrying a gun. Three years later, he was again sentenced to another three years for armed robbery and inflicting serious bodily injury on another person. In 2019, he was sentenced to a year in prison for selling drugs, CBS News reported.

Allegheny County Sheriff's Office expressed their heartbreak in McIntire's tragic death. "...the senseless death of Brackenridge Chief Justin McIntire earlier today will reach into and tear at the very soul of the small piece of our county that hugs the bank of the Allegheny River," the sheriff's office said in a statement on Facebook.

"Today's tragedy in Brackenridge is a devastating reminder of the bravery of those who put their lives on the line every day to protect us. Police Chief Justin McIntire ran towards danger to keep Pennsylvanians safe — and he made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the community," Pennsylvania Governor-elect Josh Shapiro said in a tweet.

McIntire had served as the chief since 2018. A large number of law enforcement vehicles joined the procession for Chief McIntire on Monday night.
