A Singapore court Wednesday found a former secondary school teacher guilty of impregnating a 15-year-old student.

The 41-year-old unnamed man, who taught the girl during her secondary school education from 2012 to 2015, offered to give her private tuition in physics in 2013. However, when she informed the man that she couldn’t afford the fees, he asked her to look for another student who could attend the tuitions along with her. Accordingly, the man started taking tuitions for the victim and her friend at his home.

In July 2015, the teacher asked the girl to come over to his home outside the class hours. At home, the teacher said he liked her and subsequently, the two got into a relationship. The two then got physical and had sex the following month. This continued till the girl joined college in September 2016. Two months later, the girl found out that she was pregnant and immediately informed him through a text message. The girl then informed her parents before filing a police complaint.

During interrogation, the man agreed that the two were in a romantic relationship but denied having sex with her before she turned 16. He said the two restricted to kissing and had sex only after the girl’s 16th birthday in December 2015. WhatsApp messages, however, proved otherwise as texts exchanged in August 2015 showed that the two were in a physical relationship. In one of the texts, the girl wrote she was scared that she would get pregnant.

Following the trial, the man was found guilty of “sexual penetration of a minor.” He was scheduled to appear in court later this month for the sentencing. Meanwhile, the girl gave birth in 2017 and is looking after the baby.
