When viewers last saw Thor in “Avengers: Endgame,” he was on the Benatar along with the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, that might not be where audiences pick up with him. James Gunn has clarified that “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” takes place after Thor’s next solo adventure.

In the comments of an Instagram post, Gunn responded to fans asking if “Thor: Love and Thunder” takes place after “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” “It takes place before,” Gunn answered.

Although the third “Guardians of the Galaxy” has been in development for quite some time, production has been delayed. First, Gunn was fired after offensive tweets from several years ago resurfaced. Eventually, Marvel Studios re-hired the director, but he’d already signed on to direct “The Suicide Squad” for Warner Bros. He will shoot the DC Comics adaptation before returning to Marvel.

A fan responded to his explanation for the delay and asked, “Will Thor be part of it?” Gunn jokingly replied that the god of thunder will not be in “The Suicide Squad.”

That leaves fans still wondering whether he’ll be part of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” However, unless the Guardians appear in “Thor: Love and Thunder,” it seems unlikely that the Guardians lineup includes Thor moving forward.

While “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is being held for Phase 5, “Thor: Love and Thunder” was announced over the weekend as one of the final Phase 4 titles. It’ll feature the return of star Chris Hemsworth and “Thor: Ragnarok” director Taika Waititi. In addition, Tessa Thompson will return as Valkyrie (who has been confirmed as an LGBTQ character), and Jane Foster actress Natalie Portman will come back as female Thor.

“Thor: Love and Thunder” will hit theaters Nov. 5, 2021. A release date has not been set for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”
