KEY POINTS

  • Tobey Maguire joined "Spider-Man: No Way Home" because the producers told him that the film was a celebration of the franchise
  • Andrew Garfield said he accepted the offer because it was a great creative story, and seeing three Spideys on one screen is a testament to their brotherhood
  • Tom Holland is not ready to bid goodbye to the franchise and considers his film with Maguire and Garfield one of the most memorable experiences in his career

Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reunited again and talked about their working experience in "Spider-Man: No Way Home."

All three actors donned the Spider-Man costume for the film. Maguire played the character in its first three movies, Garfield took over in the subsequent two films, and Holland joined and was the lead in the last superhero flicks.

Pete Hammond of Deadline recently moderated a Zoom call with the three actors. In their conversation, they talked about their experience when they filmed "No Way Home."

According to Maguire, he had a meeting with producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal. When they talked about the intention of his involvement, he was told it was to "celebrate" the film because it was the culmination of the 20-year franchise.

"And to me, when artists or, you know, people who are steering the creative process have a kind of authentic, genuine intent of celebration and love, it just was so apparent in both of them, that, I don't know, I just wanted to join that," Maguire said. "And I'm a big fan of Tom and those movies and Andrew. So, it was definitely intriguing, but yes, I was also going, 'well, what are we going to do?' And that was a bit mysterious."

Meanwhile, Garfield, who publicly denied his involvement in the film, said he was only waiting for Maguire to do it. Garfield repeatedly denied that he was part of "Spider-Man: No Way Home." He even lied to his then on-screen partner and ex-girlfriend Emma Stone who texted him about the rumors of him returning as "Spider-Man."

"If Tobey was going to do it, then I was like, 'Well, I have no choice,' you know? I follow Tobey to the ends of the Earth. I'm a lemming for Tobey," Garfield said while laughing.

He continued, "But that was sincerely a big part of it when I was approached about it, and again, it's similar to what Tobey was saying. It was like, 'Oh, the intention feels very pure here. It actually feels like a great creative idea and a great creative story.'"

Garfield loved it that they were not asked to just make a cameo. Their characters were used to be in service to Holland's journey as Peter Parker. He also considered their appearance in one film as a testament of their "brotherhood, which is just beautiful."

Holland admitted that he was emotional, thinking it would be the last time he would don the Spider-Man costume. According to him, there was "a lot of emotion" from the act of saying goodbye, which is the biggest theme of the film.

"But this film also felt like a celebration of three generations of cinema. So, at times, we would be getting into these scenes that were incredibly emotional. They're very taxing, and I was so happy to be there, that I had to go at it a different way and kind of go, 'wow, look at my life,'" the "Avengers: Endgame" star added. "Look what's happened to me. I'm working with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield and we're telling this story."

When pressed if it's really the end of his journey as Spider-Man, Holland said he wasn't sure because he doesn't know the answer. But he loves the character and is not yet ready to bid goodbye.

"I am not ready to say goodbye," Holland said. "But if it's time for me to say goodbye, then I will do so proudly, knowing that I've achieved everything I wanted to with this character, and sharing it with these boys will be forever one of the most special experiences of my career. So, if it's time, it's time. If it's not, it's not. But at the moment, I don't know."
