Two American sisters have been arrested in Cambodia for taking partially nude photographs of each other in the Angkor Wat temple complex, according to media reports.

Lindsey and Lesley Adams were discovered taking “nude photos” inside the temple complex at the world’s largest heritage site on Friday, the Apsara Agency, responsible for managing the complex, said in a statement, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

"The two tourists admitted that they really made a mistake by taking nude photos," the statement read.

Chau Sen Kerya, a spokesperson for the Apsara Authority, told the AFP that Angkor Wat is considered sacred ground. "Perhaps they did not know Angkor is a holy site. But their inappropriate activities affect the sanctity of the place," she said.

The women were reportedly taking pictures of their exposed buttocks. Authorities are unsure what charges they might face for their actions.

The incident comes less than a month after three French men were arrested in the complex for a similar crime, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
