Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has released a statement attacking the “fake news media” in response to a recent deluge of controversies. Her message, published on Twitter, portrayed her as a martyr being targeted by a Democratic “mob” and said companies refusing to contribute to her over her peddling of conspiracy theories were “cav[ing] to cancel culture.”

Rep. Greene has proven to be a magnet for controversy with frequent outlandish statements and a near-constant drumbeat of resurfaced videos of her pushing conspiracy theories.

Some of her most recent firestorms include social media comments encouraging the execution of political rivals, video of her harassing Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg and a 2018 post in which she implies California wildfires were caused by a Jewish space laser to make way for high-speed rail corridors.

Her “message to the mob” made no mention of any of these, instead opting to characterize herself as a martyr glad to “take all of these slings and arrows for you” in pursuit of “the truth.”

The Parkland shooting has been a focus of hers since it occurred, with her pushing posts on social media calling it a “false flag,” meaning a staged shooting to assail gun rights.

Her theories also frequently push anti-Semitic tropes, blaming billionaire philanthropist George Soros for the nation’s ills and implying he controls society from behind the scenes.

Her outlandish stunts have provoked widespread calls to resign from the left, and hashtags calling for her resignation or lambasting her latest gaffe have been a constant presence on Twitter’s trending list recently.

Republican leadership has thus far proven unwilling to take disciplinary action against her, with House minority leader Kevin McCarthy only condemning her comments and promising to have a “conversation” with her.

Rep. Green appeared unreceptive to that Friday, saying any retreat by Republicans from her previous statements would “open the door” for every Republican to be silenced.
