‘Vampire Diaries’ Season 6 Spoilers: Will Damon Rescue His Mother? Actress Teases Character's ‘Intense’ Personality

Damon Salvatore will not take “no” for an answer — especially when it comes to his mother. In “The Vampire Diaries” Season 6, episode 17, despite Kai’s (Chris Wood) revelation that his mother is a ripper, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) will go looking for his mother, Lily (Annie Wersching). He’ll even go back to the 1903 prison world for her, but she won’t be the mother that Damon grew up with.

“She [is] the most intense vampire you can find in the world of Mystic Falls,” Wersching told TV Guide. “Not only is she not the mother they remember, but it's hard for her to even remember that mother she was. All three of them have quite a journey to go through in order to get back to a mother-son bonding scenario.”

Getting into a prison world and pulling his mother out isn’t that simple, though. He’ll need Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Kai’s help, and Bonnie isn’t exactly thrilled with Damon after he brought Kai to apologize to her. He’ll need to convince her first. In a sneak peek from Entertainment Tonight, it’s revealed that Damon thinks Lily’s return could solve all of their problems with his brother Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candace Accola), both of whom recently turned off their humanity.

“Listen, we go in, we grab my mom, she flips Stefan's switch, he triggers Caroline. Emotional dominoes — yay! Everybody wins,” Damon explains.

His speech is not enough to convince Bonnie to go with him, but she seems to agree to give him some of her blood. Damon won’t go alone though. He’ll bring Elena (Nina Dobrev) to meet his mother, but viewers can expect it to be a little awkward. “What better environment for Elena to meet her possible future mother-in-law than in 1903 in a weird colonial house?” executive producer Caroline Dries asked in a behind-the-scenes sneak peek.

While Damon and Elena go back and see her, it isn’t clear if they’ll bring her back to the present day. It depends on which side of Lily they see. “Yes, she's a ripper and has had this intense evil past, but she also is this prim and proper 1800s woman who was once a mother and protector,” Wersching teased. “She's in no way a cookie-cutter villain.”

Damon obviously wants to bring her back. If he and Elena only see the proper lady aspect of her personality, Damon will likely think that the Gemini Coven’s punishment is too harsh. He’ll look for any reason he can to bring her home. However, if they see the ripper side of Lily, they might decide that they have to leave her there.
