The New York City Marathon got underway Sunday at full capacity for the first time since the pandemic.

Sharon Lokedi, 28, won the women's marathon finishing in 2 hours 23 minutes 23 seconds, while Evans Chebet, 33, won the men's marathon finishing in 2 hours 8 minutes 41 seconds.

The top finishers are both from Kenya. They each received $100,000 in prize money.

"I'm out of words. I don't even know what to say. I'm so happy that I did it with some great people out there. The course was amazing," Lokedi said after her victory.

Chebet was coming off his win at the Boston Marathon in April. He had trailed Brazilian Daniel Do Nascimento, who collapsed around the 21-mile mark. Nascimento received attention from medical staff. He had previously taken a 20-second bathroom break.

It was unseasonably warm in New York, as temperatures reached 74 degrees Fahrenheit. It was the warmest day for a New York marathon since 1986. The average temperature for Nov. 6 in New York is 48 degrees.

There were 50,000 runners competing through all five boroughs on the 26.2-mile course.

Ashton Kutcher, Ellie Kemper and Lauren Ridloff were among the celebrities who participated in the marathon.
