KEY POINTS

  • Letitia Wright said "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" originally had two Black Panthers
  • The actress became the sole Black Panther in the movie
  • Chadwick Boseman died on Aug. 28, 2020, before the film's production started

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" could have had two Black Panthers appearing in one frame.

Actress Letitia Wright recently dropped shocking information about "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" having two Black Panthers simultaneously. Supposedly, she and Chadwick Boseman planned to surprise Marvel fans by wearing the suits. However, the plan changed after the actor's death.

Instead, the actress's character, Shuri, became the sole Black Panther after her family and their country mourned King T'Challa. The movie also served as a tribute to the original lead actor, who died in 2020.

Wright appeared on the Empire Movie Podcast and revealed Marvel Studios' tough decision to shift the plot and focus on Shuri, Ramonda, M'Baku and Okoye. She talked about having a bittersweet moment when she realized what's going to happen in the film.

"Unfortunately, that's not how it panned out," she said. "I knew the responsibility, I knew the weight of it, but it was just bittersweet, something I struggled with a lot. But I'm extremely proud of myself, had great support."

It also helped her become the first Black woman to play a superhero role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Although the original plan did not happen, the new plot reportedly opened the doors to other Black women in the industry.

While she feels proud of herself, she's also happy knowing Boseman would be proud of her for completing the movie without him. Shuri's newest role will soon lead her to Marvel Studios' "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty" and "Avengers: Secret Wars."

Wright's comment resonated with what "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" director Ryan Coogler previously said. The filmmaker told The Hollywood Reporter that the franchise's sequel already had a plot before Boseman died.

According to Coogler, the original script was made to be a "character study that delved deeply into his psyche." Instead of doing it by recasting the role of T'Challa, he and his team changed the whole plot while honoring the actor's legacy.

Actress Lupita Nyong'o agreed, saying that T'Challa's death was not the whole point.

"It's laying to rest [T'Challa] and allowing for real life to inform the story of the movies," she explained. "I know that there are all sorts of reasons why people want him to be recast, but I don't have the patience. I don't have the presence of mind, or I don't have the objectivity to argue with that. I don't. I'm very biased."
