“When Calls the Heart” star Kavan Smith cooked up his new Hallmark Channel movie, “Love on the Menu,” a few years ago, and fans finally get to eat it up on Saturday.

The actor realized while working on “Wedding Bells” with Danica McKellar in 2016 how much he loved the cooking part of the movie, so when Hallmark asked him what he wanted to do next, he suggested a film where he got to play a chef.

“I really like to cook in my spare time, so they asked me what kind of ideas I would pursue,” Smith told International Business Times. “So, I had this idea of a chef, and I pitched it to them, and they bought it.

“I mean, I’m not a chef. I’ve never worked in a kitchen, and I’ve [never gone] to culinary school, but I do cook a lot, and I think I could fake it really well. So, I wrote a script based on me faking it really well, and we’ll see what happens.”

Directed by Ellie Kanner, Smith’s “Love on the Menu” follows his chef character, Hank, as he works with frozen food executive Maggie (Autumn Reeser) to save his restaurant. Of course, sparks fly between the two and decisions have to be made about both their work and love lives.

Since Smith can “actually cook fairly well,” he feels it should be easy for the skill to come across in the movie.
