Is the city where you live safe? It may not be as safe as you think, according to a survey by WalletHub. The financial website has surveyed more than 180 cities to determine which were the safest and which were the least safe cities in America.

Topping the list as the least safe city to live in is St. Louis, Missouri. This city boasts the most traffic fatalities per capita as well as the third most assaults per capita. Following right behind St. Louis as an unsafe place to live are Fort Lauderdale, Florida; San Bernardino, California; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and Little Rock, Arkansas.

WalletHub looked at key metrics to determine city safety with many areas coming up less than stellar. Detroit, Michigan, scored highest for aggravated assault incidents while Springfield, Missouri, had the most thefts, according to the report.

Irvine, California, also comes in at the bottom of the list with the fewest law enforcement officers per capita while Washington, D.C., has the most, the report indicated. Charleston, West Virginia, has the most hate crimes while Detroit, Michigan, has the highest unemployment rate, making them both unsafe cities to live in, according to WalletHub.

What is the safest city in America? The report indicated that Columbia, Maryland is at the top of the heap for safest cities, followed by South Burlington, Vermont; Plano., Texas; Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Warwick, Rhode Island.
