Fans were shocked to learn that “Dancing With the Stars” wouldn’t be heading back to ABC in the Spring and was remaining off the air until at least Fall 2019. However, former members of the show’s cast are speaking out and revealing that it might be a good thing for the show to have a little break.

In an interview with Hollywood Life, former pro and six-time Mirrorball champion Derek Hough revealed that he felt it would be good for the show to take a little break in between seasons, which would allow it to come back stronger than it ever has before.

“I’m not on the show anymore so it doesn’t directly affect me, but I think after 27 or 28 seasons I think that it deserves a little bit of a break,” he said. “They have done an incredible job and I have zero doubts that it’s going to come back incredibly strong at the end of the year.”

Hough isn’t the first former member of the show’s cast to speak out about the show. Some fans believe the hiatus may be a result of the controversy that formed after Bobby Bones won the Mirrorball trophy in Season 27, despite being the lowest scoring dancer in the finals. In fact, after Bones’ win, former champion Alfonso Ribeiro spoke out about the controversy as well, stating that it might be time for the show to change the way the voting works.

“I think what ends up happening is a lot of people think, ‘Oh I don’t need to vote for them because they’re so good, they’re automatically going to be there, I just want to continue seeing this person,’” he told Yahoo! Entertainment in November. “And that person, who has no business being in the finals, ends up in the finals. You hurt your own show by doing that. They’ve got to change the voting on the show. Personally, that’s just my opinion.”

Voting controversies, specifically glitches in the system, have led to other issues before as well. Not only was Val Chmerkovskiy annoyed when online votes weren’t counted in the finale of season 16, but there was some outcry by fans even in Season 27 after Danelle Umstead and Artem Chigvintsev were eliminated in Week 2 despite a glitch where phone votes weren’t counted.
