The truth is still out there and soon fans of “The X-Files” could get answers they’re seeking. Following the finale of the six-episode miniseries earlier this year, many were hoping there would be more new episodes and it now appears Fox is on board. However, don’t expect the next chapter anytime soon.

Fox Chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman told Entertainment Weekly that “The X-Files” won’t be back for more installments next season. However, the network is shooting for a possible return in fall 2017 or spring 2018. Right now, it appears as though the next chapter depends on the schedules of both stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.

In an interview with Rolling Stone in February, Anderson said “it depends” if the show would carry on. She lives in London and has three kids, while Duchovny is working on his show “Aquarius” for NBC.

“There's a lot of things that aren't conducive to a long-running or even one more year of a running, multiple-episode TV show in the mix. So there would have to be some pretty extraordinary circumstances,” Anderson said.

Series creator Chris Carter told International Business Times in February that he believes the show will be back for more new episodes. He said he was “satisfied” with the audience response to the reboot, especially after being off TV for so many years.

“The ratings have been good — I can’t imagine there won’t be more. Ratings are what it’s all about,” Carter dished. “But no specific conversations have been had. It was mentioned [by Fox executives] in passing to me, but it was tangential to another conversation.”

When the miniseries wrapped up in February, it ended with a major cliffhanger. Mulder (Duchovny) was clinging to life as Scully (Anderson) looked up at an alien spacecraft hovering above her. Scully had the cure to an illness that was starting to spread around the world, but they needed a way to get it out to as many people as possible. Fans are hoping the next chapter picks up where the miniseries left off and answers lingering questions.
