Canadian actor Alan Thicke, best known for his role as the father Jason Seaver in the 1980s sitcom “Growing Pains,” died of a heart attack Tuesday. Thicke was 69 and suffered a cardiac arrest while playing hockey with his 19-year-old son Carter.

A songwriter and producer in addition to being an actor and presenter, Thicke is survived by his wife Tanya Callau Thicke and three sons Robin, Brennan and Carter. He recently appeared in NBC’s “This Is Us” and Netflix’s “Fuller House." He also appeared in the hit sitcom “How I Met Your Mother.”

Thicke has been married thrice and his first two sons are from his first marriage to “Days of Our Lives” actress Gloria Loring. His youngest son Carter is from his second marriage to Miss World 1990 Gina Tolleson whom he separated from in 1999. He married Tanya Callau in 2005.

His son, Robin Thicke, a pop-soul singer, described his father as “the greatest man I ever met” and “always a gentleman.” The “Blurred Lines” singer also credited his father with being an inspiration and supportive of his music career.

“The good thing was that he was beloved and he had closure,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “I saw him a few days ago and told him how much I loved and respected him.”

Thicke’s eldest son Brennan was once a successful voiceover artist, voicing the role of the title character in “Dennis the Menace” and also voiced a role in “M.A.S.K.” He, however, stepped away from show business and now runs a medical marijuana dispensary called Venice Beach Care Center in Venice, California.

“In real life, Brennan owns a medical marijuana dispensary, a cannabis shop. It's completely legal,” Alan Thicke told TV Guide in 2014 when discussing his reality show “Unusually Thicke.” “The challenge is the great hypocrisy of how do you support one kid's business while at the same time telling the other one not to smoke weed? We do a whole episode about that.”

The actor’s youngest son Carter has appeared in multiple episodes of “Unusually Thicke.” He was named after former professional baseball player Joe Carter. According to Robin, one of the last things the “Growing Pains” actor said was a compliment to Carter. Carter described his father as “my best friend and my idol” in a tweet late Tuesday.
