Ricky Gervais is making a return to the awards season as the British comedian has been announced to host the upcoming Golden Globes. This will be the fifth time that Gervais has hosted the awards ceremony since 2016.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Gervais would be coming back as host for January's Golden Globes. “Once again, they've made me an offer I can’t refuse. But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening,” Gervais said in a statement.

The Brit previously hosted the event in 2010, 2011 and 2012 before returning for the fourth time in 2016. He’s been known for his notorious jokes on the Hollywood elite and the people behind the awards ceremony.

He jokingly stated that he would never take up the gig again, but NBC seems confident to bring Gervais back for another jab at Hollywood at its big night. "There is always a palpable electricity in the room when Ricky takes the Globes stage. His return as master of ceremonies at the Golden Globes is much anticipated,” NBC Entertainment chairman Paul Telegdy said.

Gervais has been known for his work in the U.K. version of “The Office” in 2001 and “Extras” in 2005. As a stand-up comedian, Gervais has toured mostly in Europe with some of his shows ending up on Netflix as part of his comedy specials. Besides television, the British comedian has also starred in films such as “Night at the Museum,” “The Invention of Lying,” and “Special Correspondents.”

This past year, the 76th annual Golden Globes was co-hosted by Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh. Ratings haven’t been stellar since 2016, with NBC’s recent broadcast only receiving 18.61 million viewers and a 5.2 rating. The total amount of viewers was only a fraction smaller than 2018’s numbers while hitting a three-year low.

Next year’s event will be taking place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, airing live on NBC starting at 8 p.m. EST on Jan. 5.
