Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth may have been married for years, but this doesn’t mean that he was always supportive of his wife.

On the online forum site Quora, one royal fan said that it must have been hard for the Duke of Edinburgh to always support Her Majesty since being with her meant giving up his own identity.

Throughout the past seven decades, Prince Philip has also become second to his wife, who still serves as the monarch. Sue McCune Martin, a reader, and an observer of the British Royal Family said that this was not always an easy position to be in.

“Earlier in the marriage, Philip was still in the Navy, on active duty, and Elizabeth followed him to his station in Malta. She did this even after Charles was born, and her parents and nannies cared for him,” she said.

But after Her Majesty became Queen, Prince Philip felt the need to do something useful. As such, he was put in charge of planning the monarch’s coronation. Martin said that it was because of Prince Philip that’s why there were television cameras to record his wife’s ceremony.

Meanwhile, royal fan Thies Schaper has an entirely different answer. For him, Prince Philip has always supported the Queen.

“Prince Philip is a very knowledgeable person with a short temper, not holding back when necessary. Nevertheless, he is patient enough to accept his role as ‘Queen Consort,’ not King (in a minor role to the Queen of ascension),” he said.

Gill Bullen, a royal fan who has been reading about English history, also said that Prince Philip has always supported Her Majesty. The Queen previously described her husband as her rock, and Prince Philip has also performed a huge service in her throughout their 70 years of marriage.

Prince Philip even went as far as to give up his own career to spend a lifetime quietly taking second place to the Queen.
