Peter Parker might not be the only web-slinger in the new “Spider-Man” reboot. Director Jon Watts hinted that Miles Morales could be featured in the new film. Miles is another character who takes on the identity of Spider-Man in the Marvel comics. The bi-racial character developed similar abilities to Peter Parker’s after he is bitten by a radioactive spider from Oscorp. He is currently the featured Spider-Man in the main universe of the Marvel comics, but he wasn’t expected to be in the movies ... until Watts dropped a major hint.

“I can’t talk about that, because, you know, that will reveal too much,” Watts told Yahoo. “We’re still writing the story…we haven’t finished all the way through the story yet, so who knows.”

Eliminating the idea of Miles joining the cast of characters wouldn’t really reveal anything about the movie. Watts’ secrecy seems to hint that the producers are at least considering including the comic book character.

Tom Holland is confirmed to star as Peter Parker in the “Spider-Man” reboot. While the 19-year-old seems like a good fit, some fans were disappointed that the third version of a “Spider-Man” origin movie would once again focus on Peter Parker. Not only would the inclusion of Miles, who was introduced in the comics in 2011, prevent the new film from feeling repetitious, but it would help Marvel’s diversity problem.

Marvel Studios will soon launch their first superhero movies with a black man and a woman as the title characters with “Black Panther” and “Captain Marvel” respectively, but they still face much criticism for lacking diversity. Miles is half black and half Latino, so he would obviously could help that issue. However, two Spider-Mans would also fix the issue of having two studios. Technically, Sony owns Spider-Man, but they’ve agreed to let Marvel Studios use the character for “Captain America: Civil War.” Then, Sony and Marvel will join forces for a “Spider-Man” standalone film. After that, it isn’t clear where Spidey’s future lies. If Miles Morales is around, one studio could have Peter while the other uses Miles.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously noted that he wasn’t opposed to introducing Miles Morales, but he wanted Peter Parker to be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Spider-Man. “I mean, we always thought it should be Peter because we've never seen the MCU version of Peter Parker,” Feige told MTV in April. “It felt like we needed to see that first. Miles, I think is awesome. I think there are opportunities for him for sure if this all works.”

Whether or not Miles will be introduced to the MCU remains to be seen, but Feige is excited that they can introduce any version of the webslinger to the universe. “Making that agreement ... was great, and was really amazing, and on a personal level making these movies, it means a lot because I think we can do great things with Spider-Man,” Feige told reporters at a Q&A to promote the Blu-Ray release of “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (via IGN). “I think Spider-Man can serve great purpose in our universe and that's where he belongs. That was what was unique about him in the comics was not that he was the only superhero in the world; it's that he was a totally different kind of superhero when compared against all the other ones in the Marvel universe at the time.”

The “Spider-Man” film, rumored to be titled “Spectacular Spider-Man,” is scheduled to hit theaters on July 28, 2017.
