Willow Smith caused a stir Thursday when she posted a “topless” photo of herself to Instagram. The 14-year-old daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith wasn’t actual topless. Instead, she wore a shirt that showed two bare breasts, nipples and all.

Willow did not immediately address the controversy on social media over the photo. It was unclear if she was supporting Free the Nipple, a female empowerment campaign that wants to demystify nipples and promote free speech. If Willow is an advocate, she would join the likes of Miley Cyrus and Scout Willis, who famously walked down a New York street without a top last year.

Willow didn’t explain why she put the racy shirt on her Instagram page. A quick browse through her photos shows it appears only as her profile picture, which means no caption was provided. For those who don’t already follow the starlet, it might be difficult to find her account.

A simple Google search provides a link to a fan page. But Willow’s real account is under the handle @gweelos. Her only description for the page is “oel ngati kameie,” which means “I see you” in the fictional language of the Na’vi from the James Cameron movie “Avatar.”

The “Whip My Hair” singer is used to controversy. Last year, Willow, then 13, shared a black-and-white picture of herself in bed with shirtless 20-year-old actor Moises Arias. Willow's mother said at the time people were making something dirty out of nothing. "Just don't pollute something that's not dirty," the actress told Net-a-Porter.

Since the 2010 hit “Whip My Hair,” Willow has tried her hand at acting and more music but has not been able to repeat her success. Instead, it seems the only time she gets people talking is when she does something outrageous, or what is perceived as outrageous, on social media.

So we have to ask:
