A man who went to recover his stepson’s stolen bicycle was shot by a teenager. The boy admitted to the crime and was facing charges of attempted murder.

According to court records, 17-year-old Kenan Clemons of Janesville, Wisconsin, opened fire at Trenton Strommen near a Janesville school on June 6. The shooting occurred after Strommen found Clemons with his stepson’s stolen bicycle.

The 36-year-old suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

"The victim has endured five surgeries so far, may lose his arm as a result of the shooting," Assistant Rock County District Attorney Mason Braunschweig told local media. "The victim was very, very fortunate to not be dead."

Officers located and interrogated Clemons on June 11. According to the criminal complaint, Clemons told the investigators, "The driver jumped out of the car and said they stole his kid's bike."

"Clemons laid the bike down and told him to take it. The person kept yelling at them ... the guy grabbed (a friend) and slammed (the friend) off the bike he was riding ... Clemons shot the guy two times ... (then) shot him three more times," the complaint states.

A neighbor reportedly heard Strommen confront Clemons and others before the shooting. "You stole the bike out of my yard you piece of (expletive)," he was heard saying.

A person living near Strommen’s house on Roosevelt Avenue saw the bike being stolen from the latter's property and told him about the incident. Strommen then drove off in search of the bike and the thief.

After the shooting, Clemons and another person drove off with Strommen's sedan. The car was later found in Afton, close to Clemons' home.

Police recovered a loaded handgun that belonged to Clemons' mother. They said Clemons had taken the gun from its hiding place in his mother's home sometime before the shooting. According to court records, the woman denied Clemons’ plea when he asked her to help him hide.

During a court appearance Monday (June 15), Clemons was charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, armed carjacking, burglary, and theft. His bail was set at $50,000.
