A woman in Denver was killed and her boyfriend was injured after a stranger opened fire at the couple during an argument over dog poop.

According to the police, the shooting occurred in the 2900 block of North Huron Street just before noon Wednesday (June 10). The woman who died was identified by her mother as Isabella Thallas. She was killed just two days after she celebrated her 21st birthday.

Her boyfriend, identified as 26-year-old Darian Simon, suffered injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. According to reports, he was expected to recover.

According to the probable cause statement released Thursday (June 11) by Denver Police Department, the couple was walking their dog in the Ballpark neighborhood when an armed suspect fired at them from his apartment.

Simon told police that while he and Thallas were walking their dog, a man from a nearby apartment building yelled at him when he prompted his dog to poop. According to the statement, the suspect shouted, “are you going to train your dog or just yell at it?”

Simon told police that he tried ignoring the suspect, but the man pulled out a gun and multiple shots were fired at the couple.

No information was revealed as to whether the dog suffered any injuries during the shooting.

According to the police, a man suspected to be involved in the shooting was taken into custody on the same day. The man was identified as 36-year-old Michael Close. Police did not release any additional information about the suspect. He was being held for investigation of first-degree murder and aggravated assault.

This was an ongoing investigation and no further details were available at the time of this writing.

Thallas’ family has created a GoFundMe account to get help for her funeral and other expenses.
