In an unprovoked attack, a man pushed a woman in front of an oncoming train at a crowded metro station in Belgium. The incident was captured in a video, which has gone viral online.

The attack took place at the crowded Rogiers Metro Station in Brussels on Friday. The 55-year-old woman was waiting for her train when a man walked up to her and pushed from behind as the train approached, reported the New York Post.

The woman lost her balance and fell on the tracks. She remained motionless as the train closed in.

Fortunately, the train operator saw her just in time and pulled the emergency brake. The train stopped only a few inches away from the victim. Two other commuters jumped onto the tracks to help the woman stand up.

The dramatic footage of the incident, as well as screenshots from the said clip, quickly circulated online.

One of the accounts that posted them on Twitter was Infos Bruxelles. Sharing some stills from the footage, it noted, "Attempted murder in the Rogier metro station in Brussels, this Friday, shortly after 7:40 p.m. The driver of the Stib, fortunately, managed to carry out an emergency braking and he was thus able to avoid the worst in extremist." The account also tweeted the actual footage of the attack, writing, "( Shock video) Attempted murder in the Rogier metro station in Brussels this Friday around 7:40 p.m." (Text: Google Translate)

The woman was in shock and had to be rushed to a hospital. She did not sustain any life-threatening injuries.

The metro driver was also in distress following the incident.

"The metro driver was able to brake just in time and thereby avoid a collision," a spokesman for the STIB transportation company reportedly said. "Our metro driver was also in shock and had to go to the hospital."

As for the assailant, the surveillance video showed him fleeing the station as onlookers rushed to help the woman.

Shortly after the incident, a 23-year-old man suspected of the crime was apprehended by the police. Authorities did not identify him immediately. What provoked the attack remains unclear.

"The perpetrator crossed the tracks and then fled through one of the exits of the metro station. Thanks to the police's dissemination of the suspect's images, he was intercepted a few minutes later while he was at De Brouckere metro station," Sarah Durant of the Brussels public prosecutor's office said Saturday as per Times Now News.

An investigating judge questioned the suspect, who was then placed under arrest for attempted homicide. A psychiatric expert was also assigned to evaluate his condition, according to The Brussels Times.

In a similar incident, a 40-year-old woman died in New York Saturday after a homeless man pushed her in front of an oncoming subway train. The man confessed to the crime and claimed he was "God." Police arrested the 61-year-old assailant and charged him with second-degree murder.
