A Boston woman woke up to find a stranger standing over her bed and staring at her before running out of the apartment.

The Allston neighborhood resident said she woke up to find the light in her bedroom on and an intruder standing at the far side of her bed at around 3.54 a.m. Tuesday. Cops arrived to find the woman, who said the man was "just staring down at her" while she was asleep, according to NBC10 Boston.

The woman told officers she confronted the suspect, who allegedly spoke to her in a language she could not understand. The man then fled from her apartment on foot through the back door.

"It felt like a dream, it felt like a waking nightmare or something," the woman told WCVB Channel 5 Boston. "And it almost took a second to process that a guy is standing next to you, next to your bed, and he's just leaning over watching you."

The Boston Police Department is on the lookout for the intruder, who was described by the woman as a man in his 20s or 30s.

"The victim described the suspect as a white male, with a slim build, standing about 5'6", wearing dark fleece sweater and dark-colored jeans," the police department noted in a news release posted on Facebook.

Responding officers searched the area for the suspect but did not find him. They didn't see any signs of forced entry in the woman's apartment, either. However, they discovered an outdoor chair that was moved from the patio and placed below the victim's bedroom window.

The woman suspects the intruder may have entered her apartment using the chair. She also told cops she noticed a suspicious man standing on her fire escape and trying to peer through her window about a month ago.

"I'm not hurt or injured in any way," the woman told the outlet. "I don't think he touched me. I didn't feel anything. I was still covered with my blankets and my pajamas, I was not touched. Then it started to sink in like, I don't know how long he was in there. Or what he was thinking. Was he working up the courage to do something?"

Following the incident, cops helped the woman lock her windows and advised her to keep her door locked and to install cameras for security.

"Investigators are aware of two incidents that occurred prior to this incident where an unknown male suspect was observed lurking on the fire escapes of buildings" on different occasions, the police department added said further in the news release.

The department also urged the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the intruder.
