A woman in India, who married eight men in four years, tested HIV positive after she was arrested Wednesday for duping all of them.

The police in the northern state of Punjab took four individuals into custody for duping people on the pretext of marriage. Among them was a 30-year-old woman, who confessed to marrying eight men in four years.

"The woman has confessed to marrying eight people in the last four years and escaping with jewelry and cash from their house within a week after the marriage," a police officer said, News 18 reported.

The crime came to light when one of the eight men filed a police complaint in April, saying he got in touch with one Mohammed Rizwan, who promised to help him find a suitable bride. Rizwan introduced him to a woman and took around $3,000 to fix the wedding. However, nine days after the wedding, the woman ran away with cash and other items and Rizwan also went missing.

The police said the unidentified woman would stay with the targeted man for about two weeks if he was found to be rich. She would then threaten to file a case of domestic violence against the man and in-laws if they did not give her money and jewelry. If they refused, she would sedate the entire family and run away with cash and other belongings with the help of the other three gang members.

"After extorting a hefty amount of money from her victims she would vanish from the city. We had inputs that a woman in her 30s used to lure divorced or middle-aged men to a love affair and after marrying them she would dupe them. On the basis of the inputs we detained the woman, who during questioning spilled the beans," the officer added.

Investigation revealed the woman had two children and had started robbing people four years ago after her husband left her, Bharat Times reported.

Meanwhile, before being produced in the court, the unidentified woman was taken for medical tests where she tested positive for HIV AIDS. Following this, the police contacted all the eight men and asked them to undergo tests.

The charges levied against the woman were not known.
