“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” is coming to an end on Sunday, but is the Season 1 finale going to be its swan song? Fans are wondering if NBC will cancel or renew the show, and it certainly seems like they are right to be concerned.

Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, networks have canceled May upfronts, which would typically be when NBC would announce cancellations and renewals. With no upfronts in sight, it seems like fans might be waiting a while for Season 2 news, so it’s time to look at the evidence.

The ratings are a big factor in whether a show like “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” gets renewed. It seems like the musical dramedy is only pulling in a small audience, averaging 2 million viewers with only .41 in the 18-49 demographic that advertisers love, according to TV Series Finale.

Those numbers put “Zoey” in spot No. 18 in the ranking of NBC’s scripted shows by demo and No. 16 in overall viewers. There are only 20 scripted shows, so that’s not exactly promising.

However, it’s worth noting that NBC has access to numbers that aren’t public from Hulu and their own app. The series could also experience a surge on NBC’s streaming service Peacock, which launches widely in July.

The show has been a critical success. Ultimately, musical shows rarely attract huge audiences, but networks often keep them around for the small, dedicated audience and critical acclaim (example: “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”).

Luckily, the writers are feeling relatively confident about their renewal prospects after hearing positive feedback from execs. “I am cautiously optimistic for a Season 2,” showrunner Austin Winsberg shared with TVLine. “I had to pitch Season 2 to [NBC execs] two-and-a-half weeks ago, so I have fully mapped out all of Season 2. The network was very happy with the creative direction. They’re very happy with the show in general.”

Fans will have to wait to find out when NBC makes the decision to cancel or renew “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.” The season finale airs Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT on NBC.
