A Connecticut family is devastated after their pet dog mauled to death their 1-month-old baby.

The incident took place Monday night, the police said in a news release. Officers arrived at the home in 36 McKinley Ave., a multifamily residence area in Norwich, after receiving reports of a dog attack. When they entered the home, they found the baby with severe injuries. Paramedics pronounced the baby dead at the scene, WFSB reported.

The identity of the family or the victim was not revealed by police. The dog involved in the attack was a pit bull mix. The fate of the canine also remains unclear.

Local media reports said an investigation is underway into the death of the baby. The police urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Steve Callender at (860) 886-5561, ext. 3154, or Information also can be submitted anonymously to the department's tip line, (860) 886-5561, ext. 4.

Earlier this month, a 4-year-old girl was mauled to death by her pet dog following which the canine was euthanized. Authorities said the dog attacked the child at their home in Oak Grove Road. The unidentified girl was rushed to a hospital where she died of her injuries. A city official confirmed the mixed breed dog was humanely euthanized at an animal shelter. “Anytime there is a loss of life, it’s a tragic incident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and all first responders that responded to this call,” Chief Neil Noakes said in a release at the time. An autopsy was performed after the "tragic incident."

In April, a 7-year-old girl and her mother in North Carolina were mauled by two dogs. The girl and her mother were caring for the two pit bulls that belonged to their neighbor when the attack took place. The owner of the dogs was out of town at the time. The dogs attacked the child and her mother in a backyard of the home in Garner. The girl died after being attacked, while the mother was hospitalized. The police said they were unaware about what provoked the dogs to attack the two people.
