In a horrific incident, a 16-year-old boy bludgeoned his 83-year-old grandmother to death with an iron rod Monday. The accused told police that he took cues from TV crime shows to plan the murder.

Police arrived at the boy's home in Hoshiyarpur district in the northern Indian state of Punjab after getting information about an attack.

Authorities said the teenager's parents had gone to the market to shop for their wedding anniversary when the boy attacked the elderly woman. He later called his parents saying that four unidentified persons had entered the house and tried to rob them, the Hindustan Times reported. He said those people set the grandmother's room on fire.

When his parents returned home, they found the boy in the bed box with his limbs tied, Times Now reported.

When police questioned him, the boy confessed to killing the elderly woman. He said he was fed up with his bed-ridden grandmother who used to scold him frequently. He wanted to get rid of her and decided to kill her.

"The boy said he was inspired by the crime serials and had been planning the murder for quite some time. When he got the opportunity on Monday, he executed the plan," Times Now quoted senior police officer Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu as saying.

The charges placed against the accused have not been revealed.

Last week, a 25-year-old man allegedly bludgeoned his mother and brother to death with a hammer while they were sleeping. The accused also attacked three other family members and a neighbor when they tried to restrain him. The incident took place at their home in Bhinay, a town in the western Indian state of Rajasthan.

Amarchad Jangid first entered his 60-year-old mother's room and hit her in the head with a hammer. He then attacked his younger brother. Both of them died on the spot.

While the reason behind the attack was not known, investigators said the accused was jobless and was preparing for competitive exams. The man's father, two other brothers and a neighbor who were injured in the attack were rushed to a hospital for treatment.
