A 16-year-old student in Las Vegas has been charged with attempted murder and sexual assault after attacking his female teacher in a dispute over his grades.

The teacher was attacked at Eldorado High School on Thursday. She was transported to the hospital and suffered multiple injuries but is listed in stable condition.

“At some point, the suspect got violent and began punching the victim and strangled her until she lost consciousness,” the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said in a Friday press release.

An investigation concluded that the incident occurred after the student entered the teacher’s classroom to “talk about his grades.” Following the attack, the student “fled the classroom, and the victim was later found by another employee.”

The student was transported to Clark County Detention Center, where he was booked for attempt murder, sexual assault, battery with intent to commit sexual assault, first-degree kidnapping and robbery, according to the press release.

Clark County School District Superintendent Jesus Jara released a statement saying that the student will be held fully accountable for his actions, and that this type of violence will not be tolerated in the school district.

“I am devastated, and the CCSD family hurts for the teacher assaulted at Eldorado High School. Our hearts are heavy because of the violence committed against her, and we pray for her full recovery,” KSNV Las Vegas reported Friday.

“As I have said previously, violent acts, assaults, and bullying will not be tolerated in the Clark County School District, and those who choose to engage in these activities will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” he added.
