A woman was severely injured and her friend's pet dog was mauled to death by two dogs during a walk in Enochville, North Carolina, on Thursday.

In an exclusive interview with WBTV, Dallas Campbell said his family friend Lisa and his pet dog were on a walk when two loose dogs, described by Animal Control as pit bulls, viciously attacked them after coming out of the woods.

Upon hearing his friend’s calls for help, 89-year-old Campbell ran to try and stop the attack.

"I ran the best I could to get over there to her and that dog was just chewing Lisa up and I started beating on that dog and beating on that dog and I couldn’t get him off of her, but I kept beating," Campbell told the outlet.

The canines eventually stopped attacking the two, but it was too late. "And my little dog was laying there on her back with her tongue hanging out," Campbell said.

He rushed his pet, a two-year-old schnauzer named Kaylee, to the animal hospital where the canine died the following day.

"By the time I got over there the doctor came out and said Mr. Campbell, she’s gonna last but a few more minutes and she didn’t last 5 more minutes," Campbell told the outlet.

Kaylee was buried Saturday.

Meanwhile, recalling the attack, Lisa told WBTV, "I sat down and screamed while that dog was mauling me…I was screaming at the top of my lungs. I started screaming, I said help help help help me."

"They tore a hole in my leg, and tore the bottom of my foot, my heel is split in half, I cant stand on my foot. I can’t move anymore. I’ve done been mauled on both my legs, my arm, my hands…" she added.

Rowan County Animal Services have since located and seized the two canines.

Campbell told the outlet that he wanted to speak out because he wants pet owners to be responsible for their dogs so others don’t suffer. "That’s my whole goal. To keep somebody else from suffering like me and my wife have suffered the last four days," he told the outlet.
