In a horrific incident, a 1-year-old girl in Mississippi was accidentally shot with an assault rifle Sunday.

The girl, who has not been identified, was rushed to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis with a gunshot wound to her right hand, media outlet WREG reported. The child's mother Alexis Johnson went live on Facebook as she took her daughter to the hospital.

“I was at the store and my sister called me and said my baby shot herself with an AK-47, but anybody that’s smart would know a 1-year-old can’t shoot themself with no AK-47,” Johnson reportedly said in the video.

Holly Springs Police told the media the victim's 4-year-old cousin was playing with an assault rifle when it went off and hit her right hand.

However, it remains unclear as to how the 4-year-old managed to get hold of the rifle. The victim's mother said the assault rifle belongs to her sister’s friend.

“I seen when he walked in the house with it but I would’ve thought he would put it up ‘cause it’s four kids running around the house. I thought he would have put it in the closet or something. I never thought my baby would get shot,” she said, WREG reported.

The victim, who is now stable, underwent two surgeries and is scheduled to have her third surgery Thursday, local media WREG reported.

Police said an investigation is underway into the incident. It also remains unclear if any charges will be filed in the case.

In November, an 8-year-old boy was accidentally shot by his younger brother at his home in East St. Louis, Illinois. The police, who were called to the scene regarding a shooting incident, found the boy with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital for treatment, and was recovering.

Authorities said that the victim and his 4-year-old brother were playing with a loaded handgun inside the home when the weapon accidentally discharged. The bullet hit the elder sibling, reports said at the time.
