Grant Ward will finally return to “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2. The double agent (Brett Dalton) will make his comeback in episode 14, and Agent 33 (Ming-Na Wen/Maya Stojan) will be by his side. However, this new partnership isn’t just business.

“Agent 33 absolutely sees him as her king, really,” Wen told Entertainment Weekly. “This is the person that will protect her and save her from her former situation and she develops feelings for him, you know, because he’s really good looking.”

Ward may not be ready to move on from Skye (Chloe Bennet) though. It seems he might not return Agent 33’s romantic feelings. “He takes on the paternal role in some ways and the leader in some ways, which is completely not what May would see Ward as, especially now that he’s Hydra,” Wen explained.

Portraying a love story with Dalton is familiar territory for Wen. As Melinda May, she was hooking up with Ward through most of Season 1. However, Agent 33 might not be wearing May’s face for much longer (viewers will remember that a mask of May’s face was stuck to Agent 33’s face earlier in Season 2). As previously reported, Maya Stojan is listed as playing May in episode 14. The episode synopsis says the duo will “embark on a personal mission.” That might mean Ward will find a way for his new partner to get her face back.

It isn’t clear exactly what they’re up to, but episode 14 will show what they’ve been doing since they joined forces in the “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” midseason finale. It will also acknowledge their past with the good guys. “Agent 33 was initially a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent before Hydra took her and destroyed her,” executive producer Jeff Bell told Entertainment Weekly. “So that’s all there. And a big part of the story in episode 14 is about these two.”

Ward and Agent 33 have both had mixed loyalties in the past, having worked for both S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra. Hopefully, it’ll be clear where they stand by the end of the episode. Even if they’re not on Hydra’s side, don’t expect Ward to be helping Coulson’s (Clark Gregg) team. “We’re in a Hydra-light part of the season,” Bell added. “We started off pretty Hydra-heavy, and right now we have our hands full with more personal matters. … It’s just really bringing Ward into his own as an antagonist.”
