“American Horror Story”
A new trailer for Season 6 of FX’s “American Horror Story” features a major callback to Netflix’s “Stranger Things.” FX

Another day, another “American Horror Story” promotional video. On July 29, FX released six separate trailers, one of which reveals the theme of Season 6. While it remains unclear what fans of the spooky series are in for when the show returns, we have another idea of what may be haunting the “American Horror Story” stars.

A preview clip for the sixth season of the FX drama shows a frightening, albeit faceless, creature crawling toward the camera out of a misty abyss. As Entertainment Weekly points out, the creature is very similar to the demogorgon featured in the Netflix original series, “Stranger Things.” It appears somewhat human in shape, but lacks defined features of any kind. The publication suggests that the tagline, which simply reads “run,” is another callback to the streaming service’s wildly popular show.

But don’t get too attached to any of the “American Horror Story” promos just yet. During the Television Critics Association press tour, FX CEO John Landgraf revealed that producers on the show released a number of videos to throw off viewers, adding that only one holds the real theme of Season 6. He provided no clues as to what fans should expect, but seemed certain that they would enjoy what the network had decided on.

“Every year we’ve basically laid out the themes, the new genre that Ryan’s [Ryan Murphy] going to be approaching, and we just thought [this year] it’d be really fun to keep it a mystery,” Landgraf told those in attendance (via EW). “So, we are. The scripts come in, and they’ve go my name emblazoned across them and there’s only one script that comes into the company. Everything’s blacked out that might give away the [setting]...and what [head of marketing] Stephanie [Gibbons] and her team, with Ryan’s help, did was they went out and made many more trailers than you’ve actually seen for hypothetical season of ‘American Horror Story.’ Different genres, different places. I think they’re really fun and funny and beautifully, artfully made...and a lot of them are accurate. The others are all misdirects.”

While the theme of the season remains a mystery, much of the cast has already been revealed. A number of original stars, as well as several newcomers, are slated to appear in Season 6 of “American Horror Story.” As was previously reported, Sarah Paulson confirmed her participation in the series during the TCA press tour. She has starred in every season of “American Horror Story” since 2011 when the show premiered. Joining her will be fellow “American Horror Story” alumni Cheyenne Jackson, Lady Gaga, Angela Bassett, Evan Peters, Denis O’Hare and Matt Bomer. It has been rumored that Emma Roberts is considering a small role in the series, though that information remains unconfirmed. Cuba Gooding Jr. is also thought to be joining the cast this season.

“American Horror Story” will return to FX on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
