MTV’s ambitious matchmaking experiment is back for another round. On Wednesday, 22 singles started their journey to find love on “Are You The One?” But like past seasons, twists and turns introduced in the Season 5 premiere didn’t make it easy on the cast members who self-admittedly are terrible at finding love.

New Twist

Host Ryan Devlin doesn’t ask the men and women if they believe in love at first sight during their meeting. Ryan instead revealing that the contestant’s parents skimmed their co-star’s biographies to find who they believe would be their perfect match. The announcement results in Joey and Carolina, Hannah and Osvaldo, Gianna and Hayden being paired up for the first round of getaway dates.

The contestants are told that they will have 10 shots to figure out who the 11 perfect matches are. If they’re successful, they will walk away with the coveted shared $1 million prize. Ryan tells the cast they must send one of three first couples into the truth booth to start the process.

Welcome Home

As the matches begin to mingle Carolina lets Joey know she isn’t feeling him, saying the guys she dates usually have more muscles. He comes to the conclusion that she’s not his match. Meanwhile, Kathryn and Ozzy hit it off immediately over their shared teaching careers. But when they tease the idea of kissing each other Ozzy, trying to avoid getting into bad habits and calls it “too soon,” and upsets Kathryn.

Hayden and Gianna immediately hit it off after being paired up. While Gianna admits she is interested, she say the “safe guy” is her usual pick and Hayden is likely not her match. However, Michael quickly catches her attention. After opening up to him about her open heart surgery their talk transforms into a make-out session.

Gianna and Michael are far from the only cast members to take a serious step in their relationship on the first night. Out of sight from Ozzy, Kathryn, wanting to make him jealous, invites Mike into her bed. Choosing not to go to the boom boom room, the two hook up in front of their co-stars.

The next morning Kathryn and Ozzy make up. Kathryn says she was confused and tells Ozzy she is his match. Ozzy says he can’t judge what happened because he’s never been faithful and needed someone to break his heart to break his pattern.

The Dates

Gianna gets upset when Hayden walks out wearing camo pants on for their date and impersonates Chris Pratt’s character in “Jurassic World.” Gianna complains she doesn’t want a “country guy” and prefers bad guys.

The group is taken on a shared ride in an all-terrain vehicle. When branches continually Hannah in the face she come to the conclusion Osvaldo is probably not her match. Gianna, on the other hand, gets closer with Hayden. Gianna confesses she and Hayden have a similar Midwestern upbringing and have the best chance to be a match out of the two other couples. They share a kiss on the date and he says it’s “better than ‘Jurassic Park.’”

Joey and Carolina also get to know each other better. Joey say he feels a strong connection and Carolina says she wants to go to the truth booth with him. They share a kiss and Joey admits he felt sparks.

Truth Booth

With most of the house revealing they’re voting for Gianna and Hayden, it comes as no surprise to the couple when they’re voted into the truth booth. Michael interrupts the moment to say to the house he’s convinced Gianna is his “ride or die” and announces to everyone they also shared a kiss.

After making their way out of the truth booth to find out their fate, Ryan drops a bombshell on the cast. “The truth booth is one of the most important parts of the game but how much it is actually worth to you?” Ryan asks.

Ryan goes on to propose a truth booth trade, give up the results of the truth booth and he’ll add $150,000 to their shared prize. The catch? The couple sent into the truth booth can never be sent in again. “Love or money,” Ryan teases.

With the house divided over the choice, the majority agrees to send Gianna and Hayden into a truth booth. Their decision, unfortunately for them, was the wrong one. Gianna and Hayden are a confirmed non-perfect match. Hayden gets upset when Gianna tells the rest of the house that she felt their connection was off in the beginning and shares Gianna she’s already moved onto Michael.

However, when Michael notices Gianna is similar to his past girlfriends and says he can no longer make himself vulnerable. Gianna cries and says he’s being unsympathetic.

Matchup Ceremony

The twist and turns continue in the matchup ceremony when Ryan announces the blackout rule is still in effect. This time, however, he says their pot will be cut in half for each blackout, making the stakes higher than any previous season.

Ladies pick turns into a drama fest when Gianna chooses Ozzy as her matchup ceremony partner instead of Michael. With Ozzy having a strong connection with Kathryn, the woman slam Gianna for her decision. Alicia threatens to “break” her face if they go home empty-handed and Tyranny says she would make her cry more than Michael. Alicia also admits she wants to “smack” Gianna. Gianna stays strong in her decision, saying her fight with Michael is what made her pick someone else during the matchup.

The ceremony results in two beams of light, meaning two perfect matches. Avoiding the blackout the cast is still eligible for $1 million.
