Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States, will be celebrating his 59th birthday Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Obama, who was the first African-American to serve in the office, was born Aug. 4, 1961, in Hawaii. He was elected the president of the United States on Nov. 4, 2008, and was sworn in on Jan. 20, 2009. The former POTUS, who served two terms, achieved an array of successes including the execution of al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden, who was the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks.
