Norman (Freddie Highmore) is reunited with Dr. Edwards (Damon Gupton) in next week’s episode of “Bates Motel.”

In the trailer for Season 5, episode 5, Norman appears to visit Pineview Institute to see his former shrink. While it’s unclear why Norman sets up an appointment with Dr. Edwards, the motel owner finds himself opening up to the doctor about how difficult his life has been since the death of his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga).

“You don’t have to handle this alone,” Dr. Edwards tells Norman.

“I’m not alone,” Norman says. “I see mother when she’s not really there and sometimes I become her.”

Norman’s reply clearly tells Dr. Edwards that his former patient hasn’t gotten better since he left Pineview Institute last season. But since Norman is already an adult, it’s unlikely that Dr. Edwards can force the orphan to reenter the mental health facility to get treatment.

Dr. Edwards was last seen in Season 4’s penultimate episode, but executive producer Kerry Ehrin previously revealed that the character was supposed to be part of the Season 4 finale.

In an interview with TVLine, Ehrin said that there was a scene in the original script where Dr. Edwards learned about Norma’s death. That scene, however, was never shot. “We actually had a scene in the script with Dr. Edwards where he heard about Norma's death and he came out to check on Norman,” Ehrin said. “Ultimately, [that] didn’t fit in with the drive of the episode.”

But since Ehrin’s fellow executive producer Carlton Cuse told Yahoo TV last May that they have “future plans for Dr. Edwards,” the character’s return to the show shouldn’t come as a big surprise for fans.

Elsewhere in the trailer for next week’s episode, Sheriff Greene tells Norman that some people blamed him for the death of his mother. Although that’s completely true, Norman manages to keep a straight face and defend himself by saying, “It was much easier to blame it on the kid who just got out the mental institution.”

The preview clip also teases Marion Crane’s (Rihanna) return to Bates Motel. The pop star’s character is believed to be Sam’s (Austin Nichols) female companion when he checked into the motel for the first time in the Season 5 premiere.

“Bates Motel” Season 5, episode 5, titled “Dreams Die First,” airs on Monday, March 20 at 10 p.m. EST on A&E.
