As enamored as Bella Thorne is with social media, the actress admits that it’s also a scary place to be active in.

The actress, who is known for keeping it real on Twitter, learned the perils of putting portions of her life on social media when she got death threats. In an interview with People, Thorne said that she was already used to being called out on social media, but there were some people who were so worked up about the issue involving her, her ex-boyfriend Tyler Posey and Charlie Puth that they resorted to wishing her dead.

“People take social media as such a big thing,” Thorne said. “And they all think they know what they’re talking about. And they think they know your life and they get their friends to trash you. And they get all these people to hate on you and call you whatever names in the book. It’s kind of like one person says it and then everybody jumps on it.”

The issue started when Puth took to Twitter to react on an interview Thorne did with Paper magazine. Puth implied that she and Thorne were dating and that he was caught off-guard by what he read in the interview. Thorne opened up about her relationship with Posey in the article.

In one of his tweets, Puth said: “No one should have their heart messed with like this, and I’m not going to be in the middle of it. I don’t know Tyler personally, but I know he shouldn’t be treated this way.”

Thorne clarified that the interview was done a few months back and that she and Posey had been broken up when the story was released. The actress also made it clear that she and Puth are just friends, and they were just “hanging out.”

“He saw and old interview and got butthurt, but instead of texting me and asking me about it, he put it on Twitter,” Thorne said.
