Justin Bieber was in tears Sunday night after his performance at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards. Most viewers assumed the bad boy singer was just emotional after taking the stage for his first live performance in over two years, but perhaps the reason Bieber was so upset was because he had seen what fans on Twitter really thought about the new hairdo he was rocking at the VMAs.

Bieber arrived on the red carpet Sunday sporting a very different look from his trademark bowl cut or spiked hair. The singer had his long hair bleached blond and combed over into what VMA host Miley Cyrus called a “swoop.” Twitter users had a lot to say about the new look and most fans on social media were pretty hard on Bieber’s stylistic risk.

Others felt that they had seen the look before.

Some, though, were impressed by the new do.

Unfortunately, Bieber’s hair overshadowed his VMA performance, which was pretty memorable in its own right. Performing a medley of two songs, “Where Are U Now” and “What Do You Mean,” Bieber ended the set by flying above the crowd, suspended by wires, in a column of green light. When the final song ended, Bieber broke down on stage, visibly emotional. The singer had not performed live in front of an audience in over two years. Host Miley Cyrus had to pause for the crowd’s enthusiastic reaction to Bieber’s performance before continuing with the show.

Bieber has a new album due out in November and no matter what hairdo he is rocking then, fans will more than likely flock to hear his new songs. If the VMAs were proof of anything when it comes to Bieber, it is that the singer still knows how to get attention.
