Netflix’s latest horror film “Bird Box”, starring Sandra Bullock, has led to a new viral trend on the internet. Called the Bird Box challenge, it has people go about their everyday tasks blindfolded.

With the internet craze gaining momentum everywhere, a teenager in Layton, Utah, filmed herself driving her car blindfolded with a 16-year-old as a passenger. The teen lost control of her car and skidded into the westbound lanes of the Layton Parkway, hit another car and also a light pole. There were no injuries reported during the crash which occurred Jan. 7, but according to Layton police, the crash could easily have been worse and people could have been hurt.

The girl initially told the police that she was talking to her friend and got distracted. However after follow-up interviews, including that of the driver of the other vehicle, the police could associate the crash with the viral Bird Box Challenge.

In light of this incident, the police department from Portland, Maine, also tweeted about the hazards of driving with a blindfold.

Netflix also urged its viewers not to take up the challenge, as it could be harmful and it didn’t want anyone ending up in the hospital as a result of it.

YouTube took down a video by blogger Jake Paul after he filmed himself driving as well as walking onto a busy street in Los Angeles with a blindfold on. The video was removed as it violated the website’s community guidelines.

"Bird Box" is based on a 2014 novel of the same name by Josh Malerman and directed by Susanne Bier. It shows Bullock navigating woods and a dangerous river to save herself and her children from aliens who drive people to kill themselves, and wearing blindfolds is a way to protect yourself.
